Responsible business is driven and underpinned by ethics. The new RICS ‘Responsible Business in Real Estate’ briefing establishes the global context in which corporate responsibility principles apply to managing real estate — but contains excellent advice and principles for professionals in general.

Organisational change is needed to meet environmental, social and governance (ESG) concerns, both locally and globally. Responsible business leadership is vital to secure a better future. Benefits include helping to mitigate global risks, better preparing our companies and institutions for environmental stewardship, and security and wellbeing for staff, communities and tenants.

We all have a role to play, and the RICS publication reinforces our belief that opportunities to lead business responsibly are wide-ranging and often common sense. It provides clear measures with tangible and practical steps, and which mesh with Pick Everard’s corporate values and targets.

The industry as a whole must work towards:

  • Improving business culture, for example through workforce diversity and inclusion strategies, and transparency of operations with stakeholders – we strongly advocate for this and publish detailed performance indicators as a part of our Perfect Circle joint venture
  • Improving the workforce through training and up-skilling, promoting what our sector does, closing the pay gap, and ensuring staff are appreciated and motivated – through Perfect Circle we ensure value flows back into local supply-chains and communities
  • Changing procurement, driving towards partnering, and benchmarking to show the value that responsible spending can bring

We believe that we can and we must drive success through whatever means necessary. To learn more about how we can help you deliver and operate in an environmentally, socially and ethically sustainable way, get in touch.
