As part the BBC Disruptors series Ben King has looked into The house the robots built.

Productivity in manufacturing, retail and agriculture has grown 1,500 percent over the past 60 years yet productivity in construction has remained static, with construction processes still heavily reliant on manual processes.

Recent Government commissioned reports on construction productivity are focusing on

  • Deploying digital techniques throughout building design, construction and operation to improve certainty;
  • Harnessing off-site manufacturing to minimise wastage and improve efficiency by allowing site preparation and building production to occur in parallel;
  • Shifting focus from capital costs of construction and onto operational lifecycle costs of a building, particularly its energy use.

Construction is an environment ripe for automation and the UK Government recognise that Construction has to improve it's productivity and address the skills shortage - Robot Technology and Applications are one step towards changing how projects are constructed more efficiently.
