The latest trending buzz seems to be off-site fabrication whether it's modular, volumetric, precast, CLT or panelisation. With the investment from China National Building Material Company in six new factories in the UK and the JV with Your Housing, rather than off-site fabrication is the Housing sector moving towards a Housing Manufacturing Industry similar to the Car Manufacturing Industry - which will allow a customer to purchase a "Model/Type" which is manufactured in a factory environment.

Are we at the start of a Step-Change in the delivery of Housing in the UK and meeting the Government targets of 1m new homes by 2020? This shift could drive efficiency through standardisation, component design; it will drill down construction costs through efficiencies, reduced on-site assembly/erection and reduced risks associated with weather and quality control. 

Off-site fabrication techniques and modular construction isn't new, it has been around since the 1950's, so if there is to be a step-change in the delivery of the Housing then lessons, techniques and state-of-the-art technology from the car manufacturing industry has to be shared and implemented to create a new Housing Manufacturing Industry with the emergence of leading brands and housing models/types.
