Having read the optimism in the general press following BREXIT where does Glenigan's stats leave the construction industry - our country's largest industry?
Starts in the three months to July were 12% up on a year ago, but 32% down on the previous three months. Residential starts were 10% lower than a year ago and 36% down on the preceding three months. Non-residential project starts were 9% down on a year ago and 20% lower than during the February to April 2016. Office project starts dropped 38% against the preceding three months and were 32% down on a year ago. Public sector non-residential areas were also down on the same three months a year ago, when project starts were starting to improve following General Election related disruption. Civil engineering projects starts dampened overall starts, being 32% down on a year ago.
